Veterinary Services: Tui-na

Veterinarian Specializing in Exotic Pets

The medical team at Belton Animal Clinic & Exotic Care Center recognizes that veterinary medicine cannot be approached with a one size fits all philosophy. No two pets are the same. That's what makes our companions so special! We're proud to offer comprehensive traditional and alternative care options to maximize our patients' overall health, happiness, and comfort.

Dr. Liz Myers is a Certified Veterinary Tui-na Practitioner, and the only Certified Veterinary Tui-na Practitioner in the Kansas City metro area. She completed training in Veterinary Tui-na at the Chi Institute for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2018.

What is Veterinary Tui-na?

Veterinary Tui-na is one of the five branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses manual medical massage, acupressure, and chiropractic techniques to prevent disease and treat pre-existing conditions. At Belton Animal Clinic & Exotic Care Center, we utilize these techniques to treat small animals and exotic pet species.

While this therapeutic approach serves many health benefits, it is most often used in preventative medicine to restore balance within the body, as well as treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Often times, Veterinary Tui-na is used in tandem with other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Chinese food therapy for optimal treatment outcomes.

If you or your pet are apprehensive to needles used as part of Veterinary Acupuncture, Veterinary Tui-na is a fantastic treatment alternative that stimulates pressure points using only the thumbs and fingers. Although this method is not as direct as Veterinary Acupuncture, it provides similar positive clinical outcomes, is safe, and has no adverse side effects.

Benefits of Veterinary Tui-na

The massage, acupressure, and chiropractic techniques used in Veterinary Tui-na support the flow of blood and energy in the body, which reduces pain, relieves spasms and adhesions, and improves circulation. These techniques also strengthen the immune system, balance vital bodily systems, and soothe soft-tissues. In addition to treating pre-existing challenges, Veterinary Tui-na is beneficial in disease prevention and performance enhancement in athletic animals.

Our goal is to provide effective treatment plans for our patients. Dr. Myers works with clients to create treatment plans that meet patients' unique needs and health considerations to maximize treatment success and get pets back on the road to comfort, good health, and complete wellbeing.

If your pet is living with any of the following conditions, Veterinary Tui-na may offer an impressive alternative solution:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders, like ligament injuries, chronic muscle pain, and arthritis
  • Neurological disorders, like seizures, intervertebral disc disease, and neck and back pain
  • Digestive disorders, like vomiting, diarrhea, and suppressed appetite
  • Respiratory disorders, like asthma and chronic bronchitis
  • Autoimmune diseases, like kidney disease, liver disease, and cancer
  • Geriatric issues, like stiffness, weakness, and chronic illness
  • Pediatric issues, like malnutrition and viral infections

Moreover, simple massage techniques can be performed in the comfort of your own home. This not only enables pets to heal sooner, but also nurtures the bond between caretakers and their animal friends. Do not hesitate to let us know if you are interested in learning more about how to help your pet at home through massage.
